11 Painted Desert


I will never forget how I drove around the corner and saw these strange, layered pyramids. It was during my four month long solo trip through the United States in 2017 and I yelled "I am on Mars!!" to myself in the car. These objects are part of the Painted Desert in Arizona. And there are even more colorful hills in dark red, light green and almost blue. The whole area stretches around 250 km / 150 mi from the eastern end of the Grand Canyon into the Petrified Forest National Park (which is another wonder in itself). It is also called "colorful badlands" because it is beautiful, but almost nothing can grow there ("bad").
